Is it Time your Garage Worked Harder?

Why Extend Over the Garage?

Despite the fact that our garages are most commonly used for storage, many of us don’t want to get rid of this space for exactly that reason: where, exactly, would you put the barbecue if you didn't have the garage? That’s why extending above is such a good idea. You don’t lose your storage, and you gain an extra room. Many house extensions are carried out to gain an extra bedroom, a playroom or family room, and this space is the ideal place to build a master suite with an en suite bathroom, or a spacious playroom close to the children’s bedrooms. Often, you won’t even need to underpin existing foundations or dig new foundations, as those the garage stands on may be suitable. You may just need to add supporting steels, which makes the build process easier. All of this and you don’t lose valuable garden space either!

Why Build a Carport Extension?

Many new build properties incorporate over carport extensions within their designs to lend a contemporary air, and they are a great way of still allowing side access to the back of your property and garden.   Furthermore, carport extensions are sometimes looked on more favourably by planning departments than traditional double storey extensions, particularly if they are set slightly back from the front of the house so as not to compromise the look of the house from the street. Check with your planning department if you think this could aid your application.

Over Garage and Over Carport

Here at Bespoke Lofts, we love incorporating the best of our experience into our house extension ideas for elevated second storey extensions. The obvious use for an over garage extension is to build a sumptuous master suite, but why stop there? Your new room could be a plush home office, or even a cinema room!   Don’t forget that if you’re lucky enough to have a detached garage, you could even create a smart self contained annexe over the garage. Perfect for teenagers, guests or even lodgers.   If these house extension ideas have whetted your appetite, get in touch. We’d love to get our hands on your garage and make it work harder for you!
