Make Loft Conversion Bathrooms Eco-Friendly

For many property owners creating loft conversions in London, taking into account environmentally friendly design is extremely important. Many people are conscious of their eco-footprint nowadays, and bathrooms are one room in the house where you can make a real difference.

Whether you’re installing a bathroom within a new loft conversion, or refurbishing an existing loft conversion bathroom, there are a number of choices you can make to ensure your new bathroom is greener.

Low Flush Systems

First things first, choosing new fixtures and fittings will always be a more efficient and eco-friendly option. Toilets, in particular, can easily be swapped for an eco-friendly version. Old fashioned toilets use a lot more water than newer ones every time you flush, and most new loos have the water saving dual flush system. You can also look at reduced flush volumes for your toilet, too.

Low Flow Taps and Showers

You may want to opt for taps and shower heads that offer water-saving benefits. Flow limiters and thermostatic mixers are a way of controlling water usage. If you’re on a water meter, this will have the added bonus of saving you money, as well as saving the environment.

If you’re worried about a lack of water pressure, especially when in a loft conversion bedroom which is fed from a plumbing system that starts at the bottom of the house, an innovative way to make your shower water go further is by fitting an aerator. Aerators act a bit like a sieve, pushing the water into separate streams and mixing it with air. This gives the same overall pressure, but with a reduced flow.

No major work or plumbing knowledge is required to fit an aerator and it can mean the difference between 15 litres of water per minute from an older tap to 6 litres with an aerator. And the best bit? For everyday tasks like washing your hands or rinsing your toothbrush, you won’t even notice the difference.

LED Lighting

If your loft conversion bathroom is dependent on artificial light, opt for eco-friendly LED lights. Not only do LEDs last around 40 times longer than standard incandescent light bulbs, they also use up to 90% less energy, too.

Energy Efficient Extractors

Similarly, if your loft conversion bathroom relies on an extractor fan for ventilation, there are energy efficient options available. These can provide you with up to 60% energy savings. If you’re still in the planning stages of designing your loft conversion bathroom, see if there’s a possibility of including a small window for natural ventilation. Although extractor fans are only switched on for a short amount of time, they use a large amount of energy.
