Quirky Loft Conversion Interior Design Trends for 2018

02.12.17

Out with the old, and in with the New Year. With 2018 comes a whole host of new interior design trends for us to embrace. It will be a case of embracing them for most of us, as many of them are, well, slightly quirky. So how can these be applied on a practical level to your new loft conversion?

Well, as with most things in life, moderation is key, and you don’t have to do everything exactly by the rule book. Let’s take a look at this year’s hottest trends, and how you can embrace and enjoy their quirkiness.

All that Glitters in 2018 is Gold

It would seem that copper is out this year. In its place is a whole heap of gold. This is a slightly quirky trend, we feel, because in recent years, metallics within interior design have been all about the copper and silver, and gold has seemed a little old fashioned.

But it’s had a revamp for 2018, and the key to doing this trend well is by adding little aspects of gold where you’d least expect them. Think a desk with bright gold legs and a white work surface within your loft conversion home office, or shiny gold plant pots holding cute succulents on a dormer windowsill. The idea is to give ‘pops’ of gold, so that it doesn’t overwhelm a room, but instead gives it a little bit of the Midas touch.

Foliage and Greenery

Greenery was actually the Pantone Colour of the Year 2017, but this type of foliage and greenery is much more literal than a colour. Think those aforementioned succulents in gold planters, for example. Adding plant life to your loft conversion will instantly make it on trend for 2018.

But you don’t have to be literal with it, if you don’t want to. Why not add wallpaper with a leafy print, or find hand-drawn framed prints to hang? This trend works particularly well in loft conversion studies or bathrooms, giving the feeling of a luxury retreat or spa.

Stark Monochrome

This year’s monochrome trend will be out to shock. It’s all about the contrast in 2018. For example, think white stairs leading up to your loft conversion, with striking black spindles. Or large black and white ornaments grouped together on open shelves. Place objects side by side which you wouldn’t normally put together and make sure there is a huge contrast in the monochrome.

Moody Photography

Forget your typography prints or vintage posters in 2018, this year it’s all about the moody photography. Usually in black and white, but it doesn’t have to be: as long as it has atmosphere and is a photograph rather than something designed, it’ll be in this year.
