Loft Conversions: How Contemporary Will You Go?

01.01.17 It’s lovely to design a loft conversion and have this huge, brand new space in front of you. Many home owners view the space as a completely blank canvas, and therefore use its newness as a way to add a contemporary touch to their home.

How contemporary you go is up to you, but here are some of our favourite ideas for loft extensions. Essex residents, take your pick from classic through to contemporary:

Classic Loft Conversions

If you’re unsure whether you want to make your new space overly contemporary, there’s nothing wrong with a little bit of classic. Some of our favourite classic loft conversion interior design ideas include:

* Plenty of white: white walls, white ceiling, white furniture, white bedlinen…mix the white with a classic wood floor for contrast and to give a seamless and crisp feel.

* Fitted furniture: furniture which is bespoke-made for a room is always useful, but is often found within a loft conversion due to the fact that it will fit any awkward nooks and crannies.

* Feature walls: the gable end of a loft conversion lends itself well to a feature wall. Why not choose a beautiful or striking wallpaper to add a classy feel?

Characterful Loft Conversions

Of course, you could always add some small twists to an overall traditional look to give it a feel midway between classic and contemporary. Adding small touches of character won’t make the space completely modern, but they will add some small talking points.

For example, why not use exposed brick on one gable end? Or expose the beams of your roof? Both of these ideas are bang on trend at the moment, but aren’t completely wacky.

Contemporary Loft Conversions

Many people opt for contemporary loft conversions simply because they are working with a new space and want to keep it looking and feeling fresh. This is particularly true if the loft extension has been carried out as part of a wider home renovation project.

Fortunately, it’s easy to make your new loft room feel like a contemporary space. The use of glass on the sides of your staircase, or as a dividing wall between a bedroom and bathroom is one such example of how you can add a modern touch to a new loft conversion.

Clever lighting can help your room to feel contemporary. Choose either spotlights or bold statement ceiling lights, and keep blinds and window dressings to a minimum and a light colour to help natural light pour in and bounce around the room.

Industrial elements such as plenty of metal – shiny chrome upright radiators, for example – always add a modern touch. Similarly keep ornaments and belongings to a minimum to stop the space from feeling cluttered and outdated.
