How to Keep Cool Under Loft Skylights

London loft conversions with skylights do not need to be sweatboxes in this hot weather we’ve been experiencing, however. Knowing how to keep your loft cool when you have skylights is the key.

Tip 1: Open Skylights Whenever Possible

It may seem like a simple solution, but whenever you can, open skylights fully. This will allow air to circulate around your loft. If you can’t leave your skylights open fully, but have the option to open a ventilation section at the top of the skylight, do so.

When in the process of converting your loft, it’s always a good idea to install windows which have a ventilation system – such as a small vent at the top or the bottom – to allow for constant airflow, even when the windows are shut.

Tip 2: Invest in Awning Blinds or Covers

There are special awning blinds available on the market which will stop the sun’s rays from penetrating your loft. These block the rays before they even hit your window pane, as they’re installed on the outside.

There are a few types available: some are transparent, and therefore do not block out the view. Others are opaque covers, which are also installed on the exterior, but which do not allow you to see through them to still enjoy the sky views outside.

Tip 3: Install Shutters

As a chic alternative to blinds or covers, you could install shutters on your skylights. Again, these install on the exterior of your windows, to prevent sunlight and heat from entering the loft conversion.

Not only are shutters an excellent choice in terms of style, but they have the added bonus of keeping your loft conversion warm in the winter, too. They also completely block out light, which makes them a great option for creating a positive sleeping environment in loft conversion bedrooms.

If you’re in the process of converting your loft during this heatwave, don’t be put off by skylight windows. There are ways and means of keeping your loft cool even with skylights installed, and it would be such a shame to miss out on all of the other benefits of skylights. Contact Bespoke Lofts, as we can advise you on the best way forward to beat the heat with skylights.
