How to Survive having a Home Extension Built

There are obvious benefits to extending your home. More room, a potentially different way of living and a bright, shiny new extension. But to get to that stage, you do have to go through the process of having the extension built.

And it’s the thought of this that puts a lot of people off. It needn’t be stressful, however, or disruptive. With a little forethought, you can have the home you’ve always dreamed of with minimum disturbance.  Here’s how:

Get your Plans in Place

Often, the most stressful part of any home extension is the process of applying for planning permission, when this is necessary. It’s often worth investing in a company that is a one-stop-shop, who will do all the legwork with regards to the planning application. Not only will this minimise your stress, but you may find that they have ideas you’d not considered but are perhaps better than your original plan.

Keep Talking

Communication with your builder is key, whether you’re at the point of planning application or the decorating stage. If you’re not sure on what they’re doing at that specific time, or want to ask them to make changes, make sure you keep the lines of communication open to ensure you’re working together.

Keep Access Clear

During building works, workmen will be bringing tools and materials through your house. Having a specific route for your builders to access the part of the property they’re working on will help contain any mess or debris, as will keeping any passageways and entryways clear for them.

Protect Anything Precious

This may sound obvious, but you’ll be surprised how many people forget to pack away precious items and protect furniture. It’s worth investing in good quality dust sheets to cover furniture, as, with the best will in the world, your home is going to get dusty. And less dust equals less stress!
