What Type of Loft Conversion Suits Your London Home? 

Living in the London area, where house prices are ridiculously higher than in the rest of the country, makes it difficult to move to a larger home without moving away. Instead, when more space is imperative, many Londoners are converting their loft space instead. Most of the loft conversions in London fall into four main types. Which one you choose can depend on several factors: budget, space requirements, aesthetic requirements, and last but not least, whether you will need and can get planning permission. 

Velux Loft Conversions  

The Velux or roof light type is one of the most common loft conversions in London. It rarely needs planning permission because the existing roofline stays as it is, with Velux windows fitted in line with it. Because of this its construction is simple and will cost you less than the other types, but you need to be sure it will give you enough headroom. The Velux windows bring in plenty of light in both day and night. If you plan to use it as a bedroom you will probably want blackout blinds to shut out bright moonlight.

Dormer Loft Conversions 

You’ll also see plenty of these in London residential streets. A dormer extends from the roof to make extra floor space and headroom. In dormer loft conversions in London, the dormer could be gable fronted or hip roofed. Some just have a flat roof, and these tend to give you the most space. Some have a roof with a shallower pitch to the main roof. These are sometimes referred to as shed dormers.

Mansard Loft Conversions 

The Mansard type has European connections as it first became popular in France in the 17th century through the work of architect, Francois Mansard. For this a complete roof area must be replaced and rebuilt with two pitches: the top one almost horizontal and the lower part almost vertical. You won’t see so many of these loft conversions in London as they are much more costly to construct, especially the double Mansard at both the front and the back. They will almost certainly require planning permission. 

Hip to Gable Loft Conversions 

This is another method of adding space through major changes to the roof which is likely to need planning permission unless it falls within the permitted development allowance. The gable wall is extended vertically to the line of the roof ridge and the roof extended to meet it. Residents choose either Velux windows or dormers for hip to gable loft conversions in London.
