Should you Convert your Loft During the Winter Months?

06.01.16

Here in the UK, we can rarely rely on the weather at the best of times. The weather can play havoc with all sorts of plans, regardless of the season, but many people assume that it’s not wise to start a construction project during the winter months. However, that’s simply not the case.

Loft conversions Essex wide are carried out in their thousands every winter. If you’d like to start work on your attic conversion as soon as possible, consider these factors, but shouldn’t necessarily feel like you have to delay the work:

1. The Elements

Obviously the biggest worry when converting your loft are the weather’s natural elements. Rain, snow and freezing conditions are a natural worry. However, any reputable loft conversion company will have ways around these aspects.

For example, when converting a loft during the winter months, the work is still done under cover to protect the property, or the loft can be accessed via an access hatch.

Often work schedules can be swapped about to accommodate the weather to a certain extent. The only recommendation is that any cement based work such as bricklaying shouldn't be done at a temperature below 5 degrees Celsius.

2. Heating

Obviously having construction work done during the winter months often leads to part of the property being exposed. You may therefore worry that your house will be cold. While it’s true that your house is likely to feel slightly colder than usual, a good conversion company will secure your home against heat loss to the best of their ability.

3. Internal Works

Once work is underway, you’ll realise that all of the internal works can carry on as planned, just as they would in the summer! A reliable loft conversion company will carry out all of the external work as quickly as they possibly can without compromising quality, and then the internal work should be plain sailing!

If there are some aspects that require internal and external work – for example, plumbing – there is normally some flexibility if plans need to be changed to accommodate inclement weather.

If you’re thinking of starting a loft conversion project shortly but are put off by the season, don’t be; speak to Bespoke Lofts and we’ll give you all of the pros and cons of winter construction so that you can make an informed decision about when to start the work.

And don’t forget, that the great British weather can give us just as bad days in the summer as it can in the winter!
